Hardware is the part of a cabinet a client touches every day and the part a shop is most often asked to cheapen. This post sets out what the good ones cost from published pages, what the numbers printed next to them actually mean, and which of the questions you would most like answered have no public answer at all.
What the good ones cost
These are prices displayed on public retailer product pages, read on 19 September 2026, in US dollars, sold per pair.

Two things follow. The premium undermount soft-close slide runs roughly 1.5 to 2 times the price of a side-mount self-closing ball bearing slide at the same retailer 3,5. And the two European soft-close hinges quoted here land at the same number to the cent 1,2.
These are retail list prices at one or two retailers on one day. What a shop with a distributor account pays is not published anywhere public and is not stated in this post.
What the numbers on the box mean
Manufacturers publish different test numbers and rarely the same one twice.
Blum states that "Tests on hinges comprise 200,000 opening and closing cycles" 6. Salice hinges sold through one retailer are described as "fully tested and approved to the German LGA standard, which consists of an 80,000-cycle test" 2. Grass states that Dynapro "meets and exceeds the minimum requirements of ANSI/BHMA A156.9 Standard, Grade 1" 7.
Load ratings are more consistent. The Blum TANDEM plus BLUMOTION slide is listed at 90 lb dynamic and 100 lb static 3. Grass publishes 100 lb dynamic and 100 lb static for Dynapro 2D and 3D, 110 lb dynamic and 125 lb static for extended lengths, and 132 lb dynamic and 150 lb static for the heavy-duty 3D 7. The side-mount comparator is listed at 100 lb per slide 5.
A dynamic rating is what the slide will carry while moving. A static rating is what it will hold still. A drawer full of cast iron is a dynamic load every time someone opens it.
What the cabinet standard actually tests
The cabinet-level certification most often cited in North America is ANSI/KCMA A161.1. Its published figures are worth reading next to the hardware numbers above 8:
- doors "are opened and closed through a full 90-degree swing for 25,000 cycles"
- drawers "are loaded at 15 pounds per square foot and operated through 25,000 cycles"
- all shelves and bottoms are loaded at 15 pounds per square foot and the load is maintained for seven days
- mounted wall cabinets are gradually loaded to 600 pounds
- a 250 pound load is applied against the inside of the cabinet-front stiles
- a 3 pound steel ball is dropped from 6 inches above the finished surface
So the cabinet standard asks for 25,000 cycles and the hinge makers test to 80,000 and 200,000. Everything above 25,000 is a specification choice you make, not something the certification requires of you.
Put an assumed usage rate against it, purely as arithmetic and not as a measurement: at ten opens and closes a day, 25,000 cycles is about seven years, 80,000 is about twenty-two, and 200,000 is about fifty-five. Real usage varies enormously by drawer, and nobody publishes per-drawer usage data, so treat that as an illustration of the gap rather than a prediction.
What soft close actually buys
Soft close is a damper. It slows the last part of the travel so the drawer or door lands instead of slamming.
What it buys mechanically is the removal of repeated impact at the joint, the front fixing and the finish edge. What it buys commercially is that the client notices it every single day for as long as they own the kitchen, which makes it one of the few upgrades that keeps selling itself after the invoice is paid.
What it costs is visible in the table above. Note that the damper is also the part with the most moving complexity. Blum describes its CLIP top BLUMOTION hinge as consisting "of 59 components that are finely tuned to each other" 6.
What full extension actually buys
Full extension means the drawer box clears the cabinet front, so the back of the drawer is reachable without kneeling.
The practical consequence is storage that gets used. A three-quarter extension drawer in a deep base cabinet has a rear zone that people fill once and forget. For specialty rooms, where the whole point of the job is that everything has a place, three-quarter extension quietly undoes the design.
Undermount also removes the side-mount hardware from view, which is why the price gap exists at all.
Warranties, as published
This is where careful reading matters, because what is commonly repeated is not always what the documents say.
Blum's standard warranty document states that "Blum products are covered by a limited warranty for the original homeowner against defects in materials and workmanship", that the process is a replacement process, and that "The Blum name must be visible somewhere on the broken part" 9. It also states that "SERVO-DRIVE has a 5-year warranty" 9. Blum's separate manufacturer warranty for SERVO-DRIVE warrants the power supply and drive unit "for a period of 60 months (5 years) from the date of shipment", is "non-transferable to any other person or entity", and excludes damage from "installation, storage, misuse, abuse, customary wear", and "exposure to excessive loads" 10.
The two Blum documents read for this post do not state a term in years for mechanical hardware. A lifetime term is widely repeated online. It is not quoted here, because it was not found in a primary document on the date of writing.
Grass America's limited warranty page did not return warranty text when it was read for this post, so no Grass warranty term is stated here 12.
Hettich publishes a warranty table, but the copy that could be retrieved is issued by Hettich India Private Limited and the PDF was created on 8 February 2022, which makes it both regional and dated. It lists functional warranties of 20 years on Intermat and Sensys hinges and on Quadro and Actro runners, 10 years on Slide On and Onsys hinges, and separate surface warranties of 12 to 120 months 11. Do not assume those terms apply to a North American purchase. Ask your distributor for the warranty that covers what you are actually buying.
What fails first
This is the question every shop asks and the one with the weakest public answer.
No manufacturer publishes failure-rate data for cabinet hardware, and no independent failure study was found for this post. Anyone giving you a percentage is estimating.
What is published is what the warranties exclude, and exclusions are a fair signal of what the manufacturer sees come back. Blum's exclusions name installation, storage, misuse, customary wear and "exposure to excessive loads" 10, and its standard warranty says it does not cover hardware "which has been incorrectly installed, exposed to excessive loads or otherwise used in any manner contrary to its intended purpose" 9. The Grass catalogue notes its Dynapro load ratings were "Tested in frameless cabinetry using a minimum of 4 mounting screws" 7.
That points at the same two things on both lists. Installation, and load. Both are inside your control and neither is a product defect.
Hardware has its own tariff line
If you buy across the border, hardware is classified separately from wood and it moves separately.
Canada's counter-tariffs effective 8 September 2026 apply 25 percent to base metal hinges under HS 8302.10 and to other mountings and fittings suitable for furniture under 8302.42 and 8302.49, on goods originating in the United States under the CUSMA marking rules 13. On the other side, base metal mountings under 8302 do not appear in the 50 percent block of the Section 338 Canada list 14.
Brand is not origin. A European brand shipped through a US warehouse is not a US-origin good, and a slide built in a US plant is one whoever sells it. Ask your supplier for the origin on the invoice.
What this means for a two-person shop
Hardware is a small fraction of the quote and a large fraction of the impression. On the example prices above, moving a nine-drawer kitchen from a side-mount self-closing slide to a premium undermount soft-close slide is a difference of roughly 15 dollars a pair 3,5, which is about 135 dollars on the job. That is not where your margin lives.
Three things worth doing. Specify one slide and one hinge as your standard and stop quoting alternatives, because a client asked to choose hardware will choose on price. Record the exact part number on the project so a warranty claim five years out is a lookup rather than an excavation, and because Blum requires its name to be visible on the broken part 9. And write the load rating into your own build notes, because the published exclusions put installation and overload at the top of the list 9,10.
